Office Hours Live: mmmmmmm, pi
In preparation for Pi Day (March 14th), we dive deep into the history of pi and take a close look at one of the ancient methods used to approximate it.
Pi Demo - 00:03:30- In this fun demo you can see that the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of any circle is 3 and a bit. This demo was shamelessly stolen from the Exploratorium.
History of Pi - 0:07:56 - Presentation on the history of pi.
Working through Archimedes' method for approximating pi - 0:24:18 - I use a compass to create a regular hexagon both inside and outside of a circle. I also go over how to find the length of a regular hexagon using special right triangles.
An attempt to do a celtic knot border - 1:02:27 - I wanted to do a cool corner pattern that bleeds into a border, but I got lost in the threads of the knot. I come up with some interesting patterns, but man was it a journey to get there!
